Finer Details Fan Page: Like or Not to Like?

There are a few great wedding planning companies in Vancouver, but I feel that The Finer Details Planning Inc. would be one of my top picks.  For this reason, I decided that it would be important for me to evaluate their Facebook Fan Page to see if the company had an effective presence on this social media platform.

Currently, The Finer Details has 420 Likes and 11 people are talking about the Fan Page.

The Finer Things of the Fan Page:
·         The layout of the page is visually appealing and unique.  They decided to use the Facebook Timeline format for their Fan Page, thus the page looks very organized and formatted.  The company has also associated the company colors into the Fan Page making it more memorable for viewers as well.  The bright purple beads on their cover photo really catches your eyes!

A Picture Finer Details Posted of their Friends at Greenscape Design & Decor

·         A lot of the content they post on Facebook is quite specialized to wedding planning, such as the suggestions for brides and grooms to look at WedLuxe Magazine for great ideas for their wedding, or they post pictures of other vendors work.  They are definitely not using the Fan Page to just promote for themselves; they are trying to provide followers with information about the wedding/event planning field.    This will have people visiting the Fan Page more often than if they just posted information and pictures about the company itself.  In addition, by promoting other business in the field, they are building relationships with their vendors at the same time, which will benefit their business.

·         Finer Details has also integrated many social plugins into their Fan Page such as the “Like” button and like box (which lets people know how many people like the company).  The Recommendations plugin they have on their page is the one that I think provides a greater level of interaction for their Facebook followers.  This plugin allows followers to make suggestion on pages the company may like.

The Inferior Things of the Fan Page:
·         When looking through their Fan Page it did not look as though they were promoting any type of interaction between their fans.  There were no comments by any followers about their status updates, maybe the occasional “Like”, but not much else.
o   Even in the Recommendation plugin there were not many suggestions left for the company, there were only two comments left, one that was 7 months ago and the other one a month ago.

·         Finer Details does post some interesting things on their Wall, but they do not actively try and engage fans to discuss any of the topics.  I did not see any conversations that they started, with any of the fans.

Recommendations:
·         The MOST IMPORTANT aspect that the company needs to work on is to be more engaging and to encourage more interaction.
o   The fact that this company is one of my top picks, it was quite disheartening to see that they were not interacting with their fans on Facebook or creating any good conversations.  They need to build relationships with the fans, so they can get some positive word of mouth advertising!
§  Example: Even with their post about WedLuxe Magazine, they could have simply added a question after it, such as “Did you find this recommendation helpful?”
·         Even though they do update their content, a post every week, I think they could do more.
o    For example; DreamGroup’s Facebook page, has wedding tips every other day from Monday, I think that Finer Details could do something similar as well.  This would keep the content fresh, and give reasons for people to return.

Overall, there is definitely some room for improvement here! Hopefully, Finer Details will realize that in order to have a successful Fan Page, they will be need to amp up their level of engagement and begin to encourage some interaction.

  1. Thanks for sharing Lena! I would recommend The Fine Details to swap out the Map icon in the four boxes with something with more activity. Many businesses are not aware that they have the ability to customize the four boxes at the top of the timetime.

    1. Hey Christina,
I am not sure if I totally agree with taking the map out, because people can easily click on that to find out where they are located. So I think it is actually beneficial for the company :)

  2. Great site Lena - I'll be sharing it with a coworker of mine who's getting married soon! Its amazing how many company's don't use Facebook to actually engage their audience. And with such an easy topic too. I've never met a woman who didn't want to share her wedding story or dream plans, or have a strong opinion on someone elses! They're really missing out on a relatively easy engagement piece. Nikki

    1. Hey Nikki,
I would recommend that you also tell her about DreamGroup Productions Inc, they are a good company as well.

Ya companies really need to realize that they have to stay engaged with their fans in order to make their social media platforms more successful. But you can only learn from your mistakes :)

  3. Hi Lina,

Great post! I noticed that they share and re-post a lot of content from other sites / pages. I wonder if by adding more self-generated content would engagement increase?

    1. Hey Melissa,
Yes I agree I will create more self-generated data, as this course ends :) I am surprised how much I enjoyed writing the blog.

I actually noticed that more people viewed the self-generated content on my blog such as the video blog and the top 10 wedding venues in Vancouver..

So hopefully I will find more time to create some more :)
